Our CBD Story and Why Green Compass

A little over one year ago, our family went through a massive transition in.

We added a third baby to our family, and the transition from 2-3 kids, while joyful, was no cakewalk. At the same time, it became apparent that our middle child was having some trouble processing sensory input and managing the big emotions that come with being in that 2-3 year old stage. The daily task of making sure we supported him was becoming a bigger and bigger challenge – just leaving the house gave me anxiety, because I never knew what we would encounter that would trigger him into an inconsolable downward spiral. If we tried to go on a family outing where there would be a lot of people or sensory stimuli, he’d either refuse to get out of the car or kick and scream until I brought him back to the car for some quiet time. I asked our pediatrician for advice, even insisted that she refer us to a developmental specialist, which she did reluctantly after I asked multiple times. And after filling out the paperwork for that referral, I learned there was a 10 month waiting list just to see someone for an initial evaluation. I was becoming fearful and hopeless about his situation.

To add to the load, we were moving out of our beloved home to start a full remodel and expansion. Not 2 weeks after moving, our oldest son started Kindergarten – a huge transition for him and us all. No longer just 9-12, 3 days a week, he was expected to sit in a classroom and pay attention from 8am to 3pm, 5 days a week, with just two short breaks. Plus, we needed to leave the house by 7:40 sharp every morning – no more lollygagging to preschool whenever we pleased (as long as we got there by 9!).

In short, the stress levels were quickly increasing for every single member of our household.

Ever the relentless researcher and advocate for natural remedies, I went looking for solutions. I read blogs, listened to podcasts, followed all kinds of health and child development experts, listened to audiobooks (what mom of 3 has time to read?) and eventually I learned about CBD.

I’m sure you’ve heard of CBD too, whether or not you follow anything or anyone in the natural health space. When the Farm Bill passed in 2018, it separated CBD from marijuana and made CBD legal at the federal level. The industry then exploded, a Wild West of sorts, and we started to see CBD everywhere. I had even tried a brand of CBD that I saw at our local grocery store, but Elliott and I both felt nauseous after using it. Later, I would find out why.

So I searched and searched, and eventually read the story of a woman and mother named Meredith Cook, who struggled with debilitating postpartum depression after the birth of her two boys until her brother convinced her to try CBD. It transformed her life and outlook, and she decided that she wanted to give it to her children as well. But after doing more research, she wasn’t confident in the standards and sourcing for any of the brands she encountered, and didn’t feel confident in giving it to her family.

So Meredith and her husband, Sterling, decided to grow their own hemp and produce their own CBD in an operation that is vertically integrated – meaning they own every part of the process, from selecting the seeds, the soil, the growing, the production, and the selling. Truly a “farm to family” operation. They worked hard to earn the USDA Organic certification which is critically important if we are going to be giving this product to our families. Why? Because the hemp plant is known as a scavenger plant – meaning that it absorbs everything present in the soil it’s grown in, including toxins, heavy metals, pesticides, mold, mildew, etc. In fact, industrial farmers in places like China plant cannabis on purpose to clean the soil in between growing seasons for their other crops. They used to just dispose of this hemp after using it to clean the soil. But when hemp became legal in the US, they started selling it here to companies that wanted to white label their product. This means that companies buy CBD already made, and put their own label on it. So if you’ve ever tried CBD and felt it didn’t work for you, or if it even made you feel sick, this is probably what you were ingesting! Horrifying!

Green Compass is not only USDA organic certified, they also have a QR code on the bottom of every single CBD product you buy from them. So every batch is traceable and you can scan the code to look up the third party testing results (contaminants, heavy metals, etc) for that batch.

So I was completely sold on Green Compass being the only brand I could trust to start using myself and for everyone in our family. We’ve seen incredible benefits and progress over the past year. But what I kept coming back to was the feeling that there was a massive opportunity here. Hemp wellness can literally help every person or animal with a spine. This industry is exploding, with no regulations, and is expected to reach $58 Billion by 2028 (Forbes).

After working in the Silicon Valley technology scene for over a decade, at several high-growth “rocket ship” companies, I know an opportunity when I see one. And I wanted a piece of that pie, in a role where I can make my own hours, get out what I put in, and own my own business with full autonomy over my time and my life. AKA – prioritizing my family and my home.

Green Compass has only been selling for 5 years, they have fewer than 20,000 advocates and some states do not have representation yet. They are about to hit a period of exponential growth and momentum. And they’re setting important standards for the industry – the FDA contacted them to sit on a round table for establishing future regulations. After the regulations are rolled out, most companies selling CBD will not be able to compete.

Green Compass exists to help everyone find hope through hemp. We certainly did, which is why I’m so excited to share it with you.
